Plumtree and BackWeb Form Alliance to Offer Customers Easy Offline Access to Plumtree's Enterprise Web Suite

Plumtree to Resell BackWeb; Anytime Access to Mission Critical Applications, Web Forms and Content Drives Productivity and Enterprise Web ROI

SAN FRANCISCO AND SAN JOSE, Calif. Dec. 15, 2003— Enterprise Web leader Plumtree Software (Nasdaq: PLUM) and BackWeb Technologies (Nasdaq: BWEB), today announced that Plumtree will resell BackWeb's Offline Access Server, giving mobile Enterprise Web users access to applications and content when those users are disconnected from the network. BackWeb's integration with Plumtree products is designed to preserve all personalization and security features while extending the value of the Plumtree Enterprise Web Suite. Common customers such as Boehringer Ingleheim, announced separately today, are using the solution to help increase employee productivity and portal ROI by offline-enabling key sales and support applications. Plumtree and BackWeb will host a Web seminar discussing the integrated offline solution on December 16, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. PT with registration available at http://www.backweb.com/plumtree-webinar.

"Due to poor connectivity and multiple standards around the world, many workers are frequently disconnected from their networks, and from their portals," said Gene Phifer, Vice President and Distinguished Analyst with Gartner. "The need for offline support is apparent."

Empowering employees across the enterprise to take their portal applications on the road can drive productivity, improve decision-making and provide greater ROI across Enterprise Web investments. With the Plumtree and BackWeb solution, customers will be able to offer employees offline access to critical Enterprise Web applications such as:

Sales Productivity Applications: giving on-the-road salespeople access to collateral, customer information, pricing or product information;
Customer Service Applications: giving service people in the field offline Web forms that can quickly be synchronized with the portal upon return to the office, streamlining processes for repair status, ordering or billing; and
Executive Dashboards: giving traveling executives access to financial or production dashboards, balanced scorecards and breaking reports.
Plumtree will resell a Standard Edition of the BackWeb® Offline Access Server™ with support for the entire Plumtree Enterprise Web Suite; this functionality extends offline access to the Plumtree Corporate Portal, Plumtree Content Server and Plumtree Collaboration Server, Microsoft Office integration portlets and portlets created using Plumtree Studio Server. Plumtree will also resell an Enterprise Edition of BackWeb's Offline Access Server which includes all the capabilities of the Standard Edition, plus the added capability to offline enable Plumtree's Integration Products, custom portlets, and 3rd party portlets. Users of the offline features can subscribe to specific portlets, content or applications for offline access ensuring that only the selected content will be downloaded when the user logs off the network; alternately, administrators can determine which content is downloaded for offline access. The Offline Access Server allows offline security settings, personalization and preferences to mirror the portal settings, enabling a seamless transition from the online to the offline experience. When users re-connect, only the changes they have made will be uploaded to the portal, allowing for quick and easy synchronization. If important information in the subscribed areas has changed while users were offline, the portal will send the users an alert to notify them of the change.

"BackWeb strongly believes that the ability to use critical business information such as portals, intranets and Web applications is a non-negotiable requirement for mobile employees, regardless of their physical location or Internet connectivity," said Erez Lorber, BackWeb's vice president of worldwide sales and business development. "As our early common customers with Plumtree have demonstrated, BackWeb helps increase mobile and remote employee productivity. This expanded relationship marks a major milestone in our ‘offline everywhere' strategy."

"Plumtree provides Enterprise Web technologies to help customers build a volume and variety of applications to support their business objectives. As companies fill up their Enterprise Web deployments with collaborative projects, business processes and mission-critical applications, users increasingly rely on these resources being available on the road," said Glenn Kelman, VP of marketing and product management. "We partnered with BackWeb because their solution has the functionality, security and scalability that our large enterprise customers are demanding."

BackWeb's Offline Server is built to support the Plumtree Corporate Portal 4.5, 4.5WS and 5.0, Collaboration Server 3.0, Content Server 5.0, and Studio Server 2.0
