BackWeb Makes Sweeping Updates to Line of Push Infrastructure Solutions for E-Business

Latest Release of Foundation and e-Accelerator Software Responds to Demand for Multi-Language and Multi-Platform Software

SAN JOSE, Calif. — October 9, 2000 — BackWeb® Technologies (Nasdaq: BWEB), a leading provider of push for e-business solutions, today unveiled BackWeb Foundation™ Release 6.0 and e-Accelerator v2.1, the next major versions of BackWeb's Polite™ push-based communications infrastructure solutions. As part of a sweeping product line designed to address the demand among Global 2000 corporations, BackWeb also announced plans to release French and German language versions of its popular e-Accelerator™ applications suites, along with plans to port BackWeb's software to the AIX, Linux and DB2 platforms.

"BackWeb software has become an integral part of the enterprise infrastructure for e-businesses the world over," said Eli Barkat, chairman and CEO of BackWeb Technologies. "As a result, we're seeing an increased demand for even more robust solutions, with international language versions and support for a broader range of computing platforms. With today's offerings, we're keeping in step with the escalating needs of the Global 2000."

BackWeb's Foundation 6.0 is a powerful new version of the company's efficient, scalable and reliable infrastructure that can deliver any data content file and scale to reach large numbers of users. Available immediately, BackWeb Foundation 6.0 features a long list of enhancements, including:

Server clustering. BackWeb Foundation 6.0 server clustering enables any number of servers to efficiently share content delivery duties, with all content appearing to originate from the same server. A Smart Routing capability ensures data is pushed from the most appropriate server location. Server clustering provides companies with new levels of scalability, fault tolerance and network optimization.

Enhanced reporting. BackWeb Foundation 6.0 reporting has been enhanced, making it possible to track the flow of information through their enterprise in great detail. This allows companies to generate reports on an unlimited number of custom-defined events on the delivery and subsequent use of pushed information. This powerful new capability allows companies to predict, respond to and control information flow far more accurately, leading to more effective and efficient communications.

Notification enhancements. BackWeb Foundation 6.0 gives companies greater control over when and how users should be notified. The release features additional controls and customization of the scheduling for notifications on user PCs. Notification templates can be pre-installed on user systems, increasing notification options for companies without any increase in bandwidth utilization.

Universal Push support. The new release is designed to work with BackWeb's newly announced Push Application Server. The Push Application Server provides Universal Push capability – the ability to push information via multiple delivery methods, including BackWeb Polite push, email, and wireless.

BackWeb Foundation 6.0 also features: the ability to override Polite delivery; faster proxy performance; a redesigned console user interface; and enhancements to file replication placement.

BackWeb Adds Support for More Languages and Platforms
To address the growing European demand needs of its multi-national Global 2000 customer base, BackWeb also announced today that its e-Accelerator v2.1 release supports fast localization and will be available in French and German language versions in the fourth calendar quarter of 2000. BackWeb intends to make e-Accelerator solution suites available for other European languages in 2001.

Also in response to customer demand, the company announced that it is porting its e-Accelerator products to the DB2 and AIX platforms. BackWeb Foundation will also be available for the AIX and Linux platforms. These ports will be available beginning in early 2001.

BackWeb's Polite push technology allows the delivery of large content files of any size or format, including audio, video, graphics and html—even through a dial-up network connection. Deliveries occur completely in the background without impacting other applications in use, including e-mail and Internet browsers.
