3Com Corporation Selects BackWeb as Strategic Push Partner

BackWeb® Based "3Com® Channel" to Distribute Product Updates, News and Information

SAN JOSE, Calif. (September 29, 1997) - BackWeb Technologies today announced that 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) has selected BackWeb as its strategic push vehicle across several leading product lines. BackWeb client software will be bundled on Connections -- the exclusive, interactive CD-ROM that ships with 3Com's number one selling U.S. Robotics® modems.

In addition to product news, the "3Com Channel" will deliver driver and software updates for U.S. Robotics modems and Megahertz® modems. This enables users to transparently update their 3Com products to the newest versions during idle time online.

"BackWeb's push technology is a natural complement to our own x2™ technology," said Neil Clemmons, Vice President of Marketing for 3Com's Personal Communications Division. "The combination enables our customers to enjoy multimedia-rich 3Com-based content and to update their 3Com products, in the background, faster than ever before."

"3Com is a truly innovative company," said Glenn Reinus, Senior Director of Strategic Alliances for BackWeb Technologies. "They were among the first to leverage CD-ROM distribution in the U.S. Robotics line of modems and first with a successful palm computing strategy. With BackWeb's technology, 3Com will lead the way by providing customers with access to the newest 3Com technology the moment it's available."

The 3Com Channel will deliver:

* Applications -- Software applications, including the Modem Update Wizard, will be delivered thorough BackWeb's Polite Agent™ technology during the user's idle time online.
* x2 technology Internet Service Provider (ISP) deployment notification -- Channel subscribers will receive a listing of ten local ISPs that are live with x2 technology for 56Kbps downloads** from the Internet.
* Towne Square 2000 (TS2K) -- Subscribers will also receive notification of new events and features offered at TS2K, a 3Com sponsored online community that enables users to create their own Web presence, free of charge.
* Upgrades -- Users will receive information about special upgrade programs for hardware and software.
* 3Com company and product information -- This news will be segmented by the user's specified interests, or by the products they own.

How BackWeb software distribution works:
The BackWeb channel software delivery procedure is transparent to the user. A BackWeb-based channel delivers a file or group of files to the client, and places it in the BackWeb cache. The file download occurs in the background, while the Internet connection is idle. The user does not have to take any action. Downloads are incremental, which means that very large files can be transferred across multiple Internet sessions. If the line is disconnected for any reason, BackWeb picks up where it left off the next time the user connects. A "Flash" notifies the user of the arrival of the software, and asks if the user wants to install. The BackWeb Client also enables differential downloads, where only the software portion that has changed is delivered.
