nFactory and BackWeb to Extend Proactive Portal Infrastructure to Global Audience

BackWeb's Universal Push Technology Enables nFactory to Bring Customized, Multilingual Content to Global 2000 Enterprise Portals

SAN JOSE, Calif. — September 28, 2000 — BackWeb® Technologies (Nasdaq: BWEB), a leading provider of push for e-business solutions, today announced plans with nFactory to bring customized, multilingual portal content toGlobal 2000 corporations. Using BackWeb's new Universal Push technology, nFactory will cull critical or time-sensitive information from a broad range of sources to augment information supplied to portal subscribers and employees. The alliance is focused on enabling automatic, proactive communication with employees no matter where they are located – even if they can only be reached via mobile phones, pagers or PDAs.

As a result of the alliance, BackWeb customers can complement their own companies' internal content with carefully segmented, high-value news and information from a range of external sources. Based in France, nFactory is an information aggregator that provides a seamless, integrated stream of customized vertical content to its customers. Vertical portals use its customized news channels as a tool for targeting and cementing business communities. Intranet-based businesses use nFactory products as a means to provide targeted and customized information to their employees.

"Our alliance with nFactory extends the ability of portals to keep subscribers, employees and partners up to date – even with information that doesn't come from the portal host itself," said Todd Johnson, vice president of worldwide marketing at BackWeb Technologies. "By extending it further with Universal Push technology, we're enabling an entirely new and powerful era for portals."

Today's announcement follows BackWeb's recent debut of Universal Push and the BackWeb Push Application Server, which provide e-businesses with a single communications infrastructure for any application to deliver content to users on any common data device via BackWeb Polite™ Push, email, wireless, fax, and voice mail. The first-of-its-kind solution includes a groundbreaking "escalation" capability that pushes and automatically re-routes notifications based on easily definable business logic to the appropriate device or combination of devices until it reaches the intended recipient.
