BackWeb Announces Deployment of Priority Internet Communications Technology by First American Financial Corporation Subsidiary

First American Real Estate to use BackWeb for software distribution to more than 2,000 extranet customers

SAN JOSE, Calif., — September 13, 1999 — BackWeb® Technologies (Nasdaq: BWEB), a leading provider of Priority Internet communications software for the extended enterprise, today announced that First American Real Estate Solutions, a subsidiary of First American Financial Corporation, is deploying its technology for software distribution to more than 2,000 extranet customers. First American Real Estate Solutions offers a variety of e-commerce information tools for mortgage lenders, real estate professionals, appraisers and title insurance companies.

"With BackWeb's proactive delivery of software updates, First American Real Estate Solutions' customers benefit from having the most up-to-date information to perform analyses, make risk decisions, prospect for new customers, retain profitable customer relationships and much more," said Allan Lubitz, CIO of First American Real Estate Solutions. "With BackWeb, we've gained a competitive advantage by enabling a very streamlined method for delivery of the most up-to-date tools that our customers need, via the Internet or over proprietary networks."

First American Real Estate Solutions' initial implementation of BackWeb to distribute software updates to thousands of customers has enabled a major process shift from manual distribution and loading of its new product releases. Now instead of creating one or two major software versions each year, the Company can incrementally enhance and distribute its software continuously. As a result, its customer service representatives and field service technicians have been freed from the burden of manually performing the updates so they can focus on helping their customers. In addition, BackWeb's patented Polite Agent™ technology enables First American to accomplish the software updates leveraging unused network capacity.

"We believe the increased efficiency, provided by BackWeb's Priority Internet communications technology, will enable First American to have a new competitive edge in both the financial services and real estate markets," said Eli Barkat, Chairman and CEO of BackWeb Technologies. "By ensuring that First American's customers have the most recent software, they ensure greater customer satisfaction by being able to provide better and more cost-effective services."

First American is also using BackWeb's Polite Neighborcast™ as part of its new software update distribution plan. Polite Neighborcast eliminates the need for redundant WAN file transfers by placing a single copy of any size file in a LAN for distribution throughout the local network. This new patent-pending communication software dramatically increases the accessibility of any size file by making each client PC a file server. After the BackWeb server delivers updated information to one BackWeb client, the clients can share it with one another, almost instantaneously. As a result, global file distribution is fast and network efficient.

"We see many other broad applications for BackWeb's capabilities to help us better serve our customers as well as for internal distribution of software, message broadcasts, virus protection updates, etc.," Lubitz said.
