BackWeb CEO to Present Vision for e-Publishing in Keynote Address at Seybold San Francisco 2000

Eli Barkat to Demonstrate How Web and Wireless Push Technology Will Enable Publishers to Deliver 'The Right Information to the Right People at the Right Time'

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., August 30, 2000 - Eli Barkat, chairman and CEO of BackWeb Technologies (NASDAQ: BWEB), will deliver on Thursday a keynote address at Seybold San Francisco 2000 that demonstrates how push technology will change the face of e-Publishing by giving companies the technology to deliver "the right information to the right people at the right time." Barkat also will demonstrate how the marriage of next-generation push technology with wireless, fax and voicemail communications will allow carefully targeted information to "find" the intended recipient.

"Delivering carefully targeted information to its ideal audience in a matter of moments has always been the implicit promise of e-Publishing," said Barkat, an Internet visionary who is widely credited with driving the rebirth of push technology. "Until today, that promise has eluded publishers. With next-generation push technology, e-Publishing will take an enormous leap forward by allowing any subscriber, employee or consumer to receive exactly the right information at precisely the right time - no matter what device they are using."

As part of the Seybold San Francisco 2000 publishing conference's Thursday keynote session, Barkat will present the first-ever public demonstration of the "escalation" feature of Universal Push, which allows critical or time-sensitive information to dynamically "find" the user by roaming from one device to the next until it reaches the intended recipient.

Barkat will also demonstrate how executives at Global 2000 companies already use Polite push technology to communicate across their worldwide organizations. Corporations also use push to send time-sensitive alerts and in-depth briefings to resellers and distributors, as well as measure the effectiveness of presentations and other materials through instant feedback channels. In addition, Barkat will showcase the Real.com Music Delivery Service, the flagship application for delivering push to consumer e-Publishing that BackWeb launched earlier this year with RealNetworks, Inc.

"We asked Eli to address our Thursday keynote session for Seybold 2000 because his vision for e-Publishing presents remarkable opportunities for all kinds of publishers, including corporate communications, print and online media, music publishers, and even video distributors," said Craig Cline, vice president of content and editorial advisor, Seybold Seminars. "Eli's keynote and new technology demonstrations powerfully describe that vision."
