BackWeb Names Gwen Spertell Chief Operating Officer

Industry Veteran to Expand Strategic Sales, Service, Marketing and Business Development with Company's Global Market Expansion

SAN JOSE, Calif.— August 28, 2000 — BackWeb® Technologies (Nasdaq: BWEB), a leading provider of push for e-business solutions, today announced the appointment of Gwen Spertell, formerly the company's senior vice president, to chief operating officer. An industry veteran with more than 20 years' experience in technology management, strategic alliances and market development, Spertell is responsible for further enhancing and expanding BackWeb's strategic sales, service, marketing and business development operations.

BackWeb added the new COO post to its senior executive team to fuel its market expansion following the company's launch of its groundbreaking Universal Push initiative. In her new role, Spertell will expand her responsibilities to include professional services and education in addition to sales, marketing and business development to support the Universal Push Initiative and the global expansion of the company. Since joining BackWeb in 1997, as senior vice president, Spertell has driven the company's marketing strategies to support Global 2000 corporations, created a world-class sales organization, and built strategic relationships with leading corporations including SAP, Cisco Systems, IBM, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Network Associates and RealNetworks.

Prior to joining BackWeb, Spertell spent eight years at Oracle Corporation where she served in various management positions for sales, consulting and alliance development with her most recent position serving as vice president of Global ISV Alliances. She was previously president and CEO of Pacific Western Information Systems, where she served as the key architect for its flagship product, CompuTrust, a trust accounting application. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Rutgers University.
