BackWeb to Unveil Java-based UNIX Client

NEW YORK, NY., (August 25,1997) -- BackWeb Technologies announced at the Java Internet Business Expo today a Java-based UNIX® client for its enterprise push technology solution. BackWeb's products, which enable delivery of any type of digital content to users over the Internet or intranets during the users' idle online time, provide a comprehensive Java™ solution. The client will be a component-based JavaBeans™ client for Solaris™ Workstations, HP UX and SGI Workstations

"This move further broadens BackWeb's reach to enterprise customers that want to deliver any type of digital content to both UNIX- and PC-based clients," said Hubert Delany, Chief Technology Officer, BackWeb Technologies.

"What BackWeb gains from its incorporation of Java technology it gives back as well. Java lets BackWeb push to any type of platform, while BackWeb gives Java code a way to get there automatically, politely, and regardless of network type," said Dr. Lew Tucker, director of corporate and ISV relations at Sun Microsystems' JavaSoft division. "We are thrilled to see innovative technology leaders like BackWeb help drive and expand the Java industry."

BackWeb's Java-based Client will bring its industry leading push solution to the UNIX environment and serve as the basis for a pure Java client that can be deployed on any device. In this release, BackWeb brings its innovative notification technology, polite background delivery and user controls to a new set of users and platforms.

Customer Applauds New Functionality
Allied Signal Aerospace is a new BackWeb customer deploying the BackWeb technology on their intranet. The AlliedSignal BackWeb implementation will allow them to deliver discipline specific content, such as technical briefs and newsletters, to engineers and associate professionals within the company.

"We are really excited that BackWeb is embracing the Java cross platform approach," said Tom Henderson of AlliedSignal. "Engineering is traditionally both Intel and UNIX-based and this will allow us to deliver content to both these types of desktops."

BackWeb's Polite Agent Technology
BackWeb's unique Polite Agent™ technology will now also provide UNIX users the ability to receive content politely in the background. The Polite Agent monitors client network utilization and transfers data in the background during periods of network inactivity. These transfers are interruptible so users pick up where they left off in subsequent sessions, making large downloads painless.

Pricing and Availability
The Java-based UNIX client will be available for public beta testing in October. Pricing for corporate intranets and Internets, including the BackWeb server software starts at $10,500.
