BackWeb Technologies Named to Software Magazine's 19th Annual Software 500

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 25 2001 — BackWeb Technologies (Nasdaq: BWEB), a leading provider of ProactivePortal™ technologies and push infrastructure for the enterprise, today announced its inclusion in the Software 500, Software Magazine's list of the world's foremost software and services providers, featured in the publication's June/July 2001 issue. BackWeb Technologies was ranked 263rd with a worldwide 2000 software revenue of $38.3 million.

"We're pleased to be recognized by Software Magazine," said Bob Braham, vice president of marketing, BackWeb Technologies. "BackWeb powers the proactive communications initiatives of leading global 2000 companies and our inclusion in this year's Software 500 is further confirmation of BackWeb's forward-thinking, award-winning technologies and solutions."

"Despite all the dot-com casualties, the Internet continues to change the way we do business and software plays a critical role," says John Desmond, Software Magazine's editorial director. "The CIOs, senior IT and e-business managers who read Software Magazine value this yearly benchmark of the standing of their product and service partners. Each year as suppliers consolidate and new markets emerge, the composition of the Software 500 ranking reflects those changes."

Software Magazine's annual compendium of software and services suppliers catalogs the ranking, financial performance and growth, and primary business sector for each company as well as trend information for the Software 500 as a whole. The Software 500 is a comprehensive look at the enterprise software landscape, encompassing both public and private companies that develop business software and services. The ranking is based on total worldwide software and services revenue for 2000. Suppliers are not ranked on their total corporate revenue, since many have other lines of business. Software revenue includes license fees, as well as maintenance and support revenue, professional services/consulting, and custom programming. The financial information is based on the calendar year and was gathered from Software Magazine's vendor survey, public documents and industry analysts.
