BackWeb Receives Basex Excellence Award

Leading Analyst Group Recognizes BackWeb's ProactivePortal Server Version 3

San Jose, Calif., July 23, 2003— BackWeb Technologies (Nasdaq: BWEB), a leading provider of offline web infrastructure software, today announced that Basex, a leading research and consulting firm that pioneered collaborative business knowledge research, has awarded a Basex Excellence Award (a "Basey") to BackWeb in recognition of Version 3 of the BackWeb® ProactivePortal® Server. The Basey award is given to industry-leading companies who have achieved all-around excellence for an outstanding product or service in the Collaborative Business Knowledge market. The Basey was recently presented to BackWeb at the Basex event, "The New Workplace: Optimizing Organizational Productivity."

Basex recognized BackWeb's product as the industry's first offering that gives mobile enterprise workers offline access to enterprise portals, intranets and web-based applications.
