BackWeb and EC-Gate to Power Custom B-to-B Portals
with BackWeb's Polite Push Infrastructure
New Generation of Push-Enabled Portals Can Send Mission-Critical, Time-Sensitive Information and Alerts to Targeted Audiences Across Any Network
SAN JOSE, Calif. and TORONTO — July 5, 2000 — BackWeb® Technologies (Nasdaq: BWEB), a leading provider of push for e-business solutions, and EC-Gate, a leading collaborative commerce ASP that custom designs industry-specific portals for business-to-business marketplaces, today announced that BackWeb's patented Polite™ push technology will enable a new generation of proactive B-to-B portals.
By combining BackWeb's push technology with EC-Gate's collaborative commerce expertise and wireless Internet capabilities, portal hosts can proactively deliver vital information and alerts to key users at precisely the right time.
"With the tight interoperability of BackWeb's Polite push technology, we will offer our clients the industry's first truly proactive intelligent marketplace," said Sebastian Kuntz, CEO of EC-Gate. "Together, we are extending the value proposition to marketplaces by providing efficient, highly valuable, mission critical information to carefully targeted recipients. We believe push technology – over any type of network – will be an important feature in the B-to-B environment."
To integrate its Polite push technology with wireless devices, BackWeb recently acquired the technology assets of Mobix Communications Ltd., a leading provider of technology platforms for wireless data solutions. The resulting push infrastructure can be customized to communicate with different carriers and wireless networks – via SMS and WAP protocols – to provide BackWeb customers with bandwidth-efficient and broadly applicable wireless data delivery capabilities. BackWeb expects to first integrate wireless technology into its product line in the fourth calendar quarter of 2000.
BackWeb's patented Polite push technology allows even media-rich content to reach desktop PC users with no effect on the performance of other network applications such as email and browsing. As a result, portal hosts for the first time can simultaneously deliver audio and video files, slide presentations and other sophisticated multimedia content to any number of recipients – from thousands of employees and partners to millions of consumers.
"We are excited that EC-Gate is employing BackWeb's Polite push infrastructure to enable one of the most exciting opportunities in e-business," said Eli Barkat, chairman and CEO of BackWeb Technologies. "As trading partners continue to collaborate via the Web, the ability to pinpoint mission-critical information to a specific recipient and at a precise time will become invaluable. We look forward to working with EC-Gate to create truly proactive portals for e-business."
"This highlights exactly the reason Cebra enters into strategic alliances. We see the potential of this technology to add significant value to our TotalTrade offering," said Renah Persofsky, President of Cebra Inc., a wholly owned e-commerce subsidiary of Bank of Montreal and an EC-Gate client. "TotalTrade allows businesses and their trading partners to securely receive, process and send documents and financial transactions electronically through one interface. Push technology would allow us to add proactivity to the mix."
With BackWeb, portals created by EC-Gate will have a significant impact on a company's ability to automate key business processes, integrate strategic business processes and provide tremendous flexibility, reach and efficiency. These proactive portals will provide direct and simple information for decisions that often involve very complex processes. BackWeb also enables portals to escalate alerts from one device to the next, thus ensuring that urgent information ultimately reaches its destination.
For instance, a push-enabled portal could immediately alert sales people to price changes, new product features or even client satisfaction scores. The portals could also be used to create more robust customer relationship management systems. For example, a financial services industry portal could notify key clients of new products, interest rate changes or movements in stock prices. BackWeb enables portals to escalate alerts from one device to the next, thus ensuring that urgent information ultimately reaches its destination.
EC-Gate will initially target several proactive portal markets. In the Dutch construction industry, EC-Gate developed EC-Bouw, a unique electronic marketplace that covers the entire supply chain, from manufacturers and wholesalers to distributors and contractors. Push technology would broaden the EC-Bouw offering by allowing, for example, a manager to easily notify a truck driver on the road that a delivery destination had changed (for more information on EC-Bouw, visit www.ec-bouw.com).
