BackWeb and ElasticEdge Enable Easy Delivery of Rich Media Content with BackWeb's Push Technology

Push-Enabled Network Infrastructure Provides Backbone for RealNetworks' Real.com Music Delivery Service, with More Rich Media Applications to Follow

SAN JOSE, Calif., and PLANO, Texas — June 29, 2000 — BackWeb® Technologies (Nasdaq: BWEB), a leading provider of push for e-business solutions, and ElasticEdge, a network services provider offering scheduled digital delivery, today announced plans to enhance the worldwide ElasticEdge network with BackWeb's patented Polite™ push technology. With BackWeb technology and network connectivity initially provided by Globix Corporation, ElasticEdge will enable proactive, automatic delivery of rich media content via its "edge network" high-volume server network presence.

The first customer to use the new push-enabled consumer infrastructure is RealNetworks® Inc., which today launched its Real.com™ Music Delivery service, a first-of-its-kind Internet music delivery service for consumers. Available immediately, the subscription-based service enables the more than 35 million unique registered users of RealJukebox™ to automatically discover and receive CD-quality samples and full-length songs from their desired genre of music. ElasticEdge and BackWeb also expect other rich media leaders to leverage ElasticEdge's enhanced network to deliver a broad range of consumer applications. BackWeb's patented Polite push technology ensures that users can receive requested digital music with no impact on the performance of other Internet applications such as email, chat, streaming media and browsing.

"Enhancing the ElasticEdge network with push technology will open the door to enormous rich media publishing opportunities on a truly global scale," said Eli Barkat, chairman and CEO of BackWeb Technologies. "By supporting RealNetworks' exciting Real.com Music Delivery service, we are ensuring that BackWeb and Elastic Edge will be ready for any broad consumer application or service that requires the industry standard in networking and Web delivery technologies."

"A high-performance network infrastructure for rich media, applications, software and services will emerge as a critical component in providing content developers and service providers with multiple options for delivery of digital content," said Andre Angel, president and CEO of ElasticEdge. "With Polite push technology from BackWeb, we're building a worldwide, large-payload network to make it simple for consumers to automatically receive any type of content. Having a customer like RealNetworks gives us the opportunity to quickly offer a bandwidth-sensitive, non-peak delivery option to a huge consumer base."

"Part of the challenge of delivering custom music over the Internet is building an infrastructure that is sophisticated and scalable enough to provide a great customer experience," said Richard Brownrigg, general manager of RealJukebox at RealNetworks, Inc. "BackWeb and ElasticEdge have provided a great combination of technology breadth and service expertise to keep Real.com Music Delivery subscribers in new music for years to come."

Fast becoming a de facto Internet standard, BackWeb's patented Polite push infrastructure allows companies to create truly proactive consumer and e-business portals that automatically and seamlessly deliver targeted, one-to-one and one-to-many content – no matter how media-rich or time-sensitive. With BackWeb, portal hosts and rich media content publishers can deliver multimedia-rich digital packages of any size or format, including audio, video, graphics and html. BackWeb's Polite Agent™ avoids disrupting the consumer by using only available bandwidth and politely delivering the information in the background.

About ElasticEdge
ElasticEdge is deploying a global, scheduled-delivery network of servers that give content developers, service providers and consumers cost-versus-time choices in the delivery of bandwidth-intensive, rich media content. The first 100 servers in the network are scheduled to be online by October 31, 2000. By giving consumers a choice regarding the time sensitivity of bandwidth-intensive media delivery, content providers can build additional revenue-generating capability into their content, and service providers can better utilize low-traffic periods. Consumers gain a choice between the benefits of immediate delivery versus the benefits of scheduled delivery.

ElasticEdge (www.elasticedge.com) focuses on utilizing untapped network bandwidth and leveraging packaged delivery concepts to distribute rich media content for creating enhanced customer experiences. ElasticEdge provides complete content management, content hosting, subscription-based and pay-per transactions, and digital rights management services for any electronic application. ElasticEdge is funded by BRM Group (www.brm.com) and is headquartered in Plano, Texas with offices in Santa Clara, Calif., and Fort Lee, New Jersey.
