SAN JOSE, CALIF. (May 4, 1998) - BackWeb Technologies announced today that Bill Larson, CEO and Chairman of Network Associates, Inc. joined its board of directors. Larson brings his solid industry experience and proven track record for success to BackWeb's board. Larson's most recent business successes include growing his own company more than 30 fold during the past four years and consistently beating market earnings expectations.

As a member of BackWeb's board, Larson will leverage his many years of experience in the industry to help BackWeb further its success in enterprise knowledge distribution, continue its rapid growth and successfully scale to the opportunities available to it.

"Bill has demonstrated an incredible ability to manage hyper-growth and aggressively scale a company's service and offerings to meet the needs of the enterprise," said Eli Barkat, BackWeb's chief executive officer. "As BackWeb continues to grow and scale to the market opportunity available to its enterprise knowledge distribution solution, we are excited to work with Bill and learn from his experiences."

Larson was introduced to BackWeb more than a year ago when Network Associates began testing push technology products and selected BackWeb to distribute anti-virus updates over the Internet to its customers. The BackWeb and Network Associates relationship has grown stronger over the past fifteen months, with a recent announcement from Network Associates that it will integrate BackWeb into its new iZAC offering.

"I've experienced BackWeb's products and their benefits first hand and understand the immense opportunity available to the company," said Bill Larson, Network Associates CEO and chairman. "Enterprises worldwide use BackWeb today to provide superior customer service, empower employees and increase productivity and, as a result, grow their businesses. I'm pleased to be a part of BackWeb's success."

Larson has served as the CEO and Chairman of Network Associates since 1993 and has grown the company into one of the world's 10 largest software companies, expanding its focus from anti-virus to a robust line of network security, help desk and network management solutions. Prior to joining Network Associates, Larson served more than five years as vice president of Sun Microsystems, Inc. and held additional positions at Apple Computer, Inc., Spinnaker Software and Bain & Co. Larson holds degrees with honors from Stanford Law School and the Wharton School of Business. He's also a member of the California Bar Association.
