BackWeb, TIBCO Announce Strategic Partnership, Product Integration

BackWeb Joins IP Multicast Initiative

SAN DIEGO, (April 28, 1997) -- BackWeb Technologies, a leading push/pull Internet broadcasting company, and TIBCO, Inc., announced a strategic partnership and plans for product integration at Internet Showcase here today. The partnership will involve integration of the TIB (The Information Bus) technology into BackWeb's client/server software to enable true personalized Internet multicasting. BackWeb also announced its membership in the IP Multicast Initiative, a multi-vendor cooperative effort to promote the deployment of industry-standard IP Multicast technology. BackWeb is the first Internet push vendor to become a member.

BackWeb's server software integrated with the TIBCO technology will be available from both companies as part of a joint sales arrangement. A preview version of the software will be available in August and will ship in final version this fall. Pricing for the BackWeb/TIBCO server software will be announced at time of shipment.

"BackWeb is already recognized as one of the most robust push platforms, and their integration of our TIB technology into their client/sever software gives both companies access to a new customer set," said Vivek Ranadive, chairman and CEO of TIBCO. "Customers in the financial industry are particularly interested in the combined capabilities of the two technologies, and we look forward to working with BackWeb to address their needs."

"Combining the BackWeb and TIBCO technologies will give BackWeb channel providers a high-performance enterprise push solution, where efficient real-time delivery of rich multimedia content and scalability to tens of thousands of users is critical," said Eli Barkat, CEO of BackWeb Technologies. "We are also creating a unique solution for targeted, enterprise-wide software deployment with minimal impact on network bandwidth, which is very exciting to both companies' corporate customers."

BackWeb Joins IP Multicast Initiative
BackWeb's membership in the IP Multicast Initiative (IPMI) is a response to customer interest in real-time, scalable push solutions that complement BackWeb's "polite" delivery of personalized content. IP Multicast is an open standard which enables efficient bandwidth usage for applications that distribute data to multiple recipients simultaneously. TIBCO is a founding member of the IPMI, which is managed by Stardust Technologies. More information can be found at www.ipmulticast.com.
