BackWeb and Computer Associates Partner to Further Enhance the Internet Software Delivery Capabilities of CA's Unicenter TNG

Integrated Enterprise Solution to be Featured at CA-World 1998

Islandia, N.Y., (April 23, 1998) -- Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) and BackWeb Technologies, a leader in enterprise push solutions for Knowledge Distribution, today announced an agreement to provide Polite Server and Agent technology to Unicenter TNG clients. Under the terms of the technology development agreement, BackWeb's Polite Server and Agent technology will be integrated with Unicenter TNG Software Delivery solution, and distributed at no extra charge.

Unicenter TNG Software Delivery, coupled with BackWeb's Polite distribution technology, enables clients to seamlessly distribute software and updates via the Internet to remote and dial-up users -- leveraging bandwidth-friendly and scalable technology to keep users both within and outside the enterprise up-to-date. This technology is especially valuable for the many remote and dial-up users who have slow Internet connections with limited bandwidth availability, and who experience more interruptions during an Internet connection than corporate users.

"Combining the sophistication of Unicenter TNG Software Delivery with BackWeb's Polite distribution technology gives enterprise customers additional benefits in today's Internet environments," said Yogesh Gupta, CA senior vice president of product strategy. "The combined solution will help lower the cost of ownership and provide improved business value of remote desktops."

Automated communication is becoming increasingly critical as administrators are required to accommodate greater numbers of mobile computing employees -- who are either traveling or telecommuting from home -- while at the same time simplifying management and lowering total cost of ownership.

"We're pleased to integrate our Polite Agent™ and Server technology with Unicenter TNG, the leading enterprise management solution, to provide automatic distribution of software to users outside the traditional enterprise infrastructure," said Gwen Spertell, senior vice president of sales, marketing and business development at BackWeb. "Companies using the combined solution will benefit from remote and dial-up users having easy access to timely information, empowering them to make better decisions and be more productive."

The solution allows remote and dial-up users to continue working while the agent downloads data using the available bandwidth. Leveraging BackWeb's byte-level differential download capabilities, Unicenter TNG's Software Delivery reduces transfer time without impacting users' activities over the Internet -- downloads are automatically suspended and restarted as bandwidth becomes available, eliminating the need to completely restart the download after an interruption.

The integrated solution will be featured at CA-World 1998, CA's annual worldwide users conference and technology exhibition, which will take place April 26 through May 1 in New Orleans.

Computer Associates' worldwide sales force will be trained on BackWeb's offerings, and will provide the company with access to clients expressing an interest in additional BackWeb technology.
