BackWeb Deployed by Canada's Largest National Wireless Communications Company - Rogers Communications Inc.Rogers Communications Deploys BackWeb's Internet Communications Platform to Deliver Business-Critical Information to EmployeesSAN JOSE, Calif. - April 21, 1999 - BackWeb™ Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of Internet communication infrastructure and applications for the extended enterprise, today announced that Toronto-based Rogers Communications Inc. is now deploying its Internet communications platform to deliver business-critical information to its employees. Rogers is Canada's largest national wireless communications service provider, as well as the largest cable television service provider. Rogers is also one of the first large corporations in Canada to use the BackWeb technology. "We found that sending critical information using traditional tools, including newsletters and e-mail messages, was not an effective way to communicate with our employees," said Ronan McGrath, President of Rogers Shared Services. "With BackWeb, we're now able to get the critical information through to our employees by delivering it proactively and in a way that captures their attention. This gives them the information they need to do their jobs, and also gives Rogers a competitive advantage by allowing us to adapt to change faster." BackWeb enables the company to proactively deliver time-sensitive, business-critical information, such as announcements on company acquisitions and videos on new products and services, to its employees in a way that captures their attention. With BackWeb, Rogers creates high-impact, multimedia Flashes that pop up on the employees' screens, regardless of the application they are using. These Flashes alert the employee that there is critical information waiting for them. They simply click on the Flash to get the full story, video or presentation. The company also has the ability to dictate the urgency and level of priority of the Flashes, as well target and track the recipients. For files of any size, the information is sent when the network is idle so it doesn't interfere with other networked applications or performance. "Under the leadership of Ted Rogers, Rogers continues to be on the cutting-edge of communications technology," said Eli Barkat, CEO of BackWeb Technologies. "By using a proactive communications delivery system, such as BackWeb, Rogers is not only improving and enhancing the knowledge of its employees, but it's also gaining significant return on investment by being able to respond and adapt to change faster." The implementation of the BackWeb Internet communications platform is a part of a widespread desktop initiative in which Rogers is upgrading and Web-enabling its existing software and information delivery systems. BackWeb was selected after an extensive review of Internet communications platforms, currently offered by several companies in North America. About Rogers Communications Inc.
