BackWeb Technologies and Verity, Inc. Develop Joint Distribution Solution for Intranets and Extranets

Partnership to Offer Software Solutions to Help Corporations Target and Manage Information Distributed to the Desktop

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Mar. 9, 1998) - BackWeb Technologies, the leader in knowledge distribution solutions, and Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise knowledge retrieval applications, today announced a joint partnership to provide integrated push solutions for knowledge management applications.

The integrated BackWeb/Verity solution is designed for large corporations that need to quickly distribute mission critical information in a format personalized for each user. This combination also addresses the need to extend enterprise dissemination to partners via an extranet.

"Partnering with Verity was a logical step given the synergy of our combined solutions," said Mikki Nasch, director of business development at BackWeb. "The power of BackWeb Infocenter 4.0, combined with Verity's Agent Server, will allow enterprise customers to tap into vast knowledge resources and deliver just-in-time, relevant information to employees, suppliers and customers."

Enterprises using the combined Agent Server and BackWeb solution will be able to disseminate knowledge-filtered information, such as dynamic Web pages and Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) compliant databases, to remote destinations. Through standard customizations, Agent Server can deliver information to a BackWeb channel where it can be processed and distributed to desktop clients via BackWeb's new Infocenter v4.0 client/server knowledge center.

BackWeb's tools for customized knowledge automation and distribution on intranets and extranets complement Verity's expertise in intelligent profiling and filtering systems for knowledge retrieval. The combined offering is aimed to help corporations target and manage information pushed to corporate users' desktops with unprecedented efficiency and speed.

"Verity's profiling and filtering tools, combined with BackWeb's advanced knowledge delivery and knowledge automation technology, will offer organizations a complete solution for flexible, organization-wide information delivery," said Ronald Weissman, Verity's Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. "We're combining the simplicity of desktop channel delivery with the richness and precision of fine-grained filtering and user profiling to give corporations even greater control over intranet/extranet content."
