SAP and BackWeb Announce Strategic Alliance to Bring New Push Technology to mySAP.com™ Marketplace for Complex RFPs and RFQs

WALLDORF, Germany and SAN JOSE, Calif. — March 7, 2000 — SAP AG (NYSE ADR: SAP), the world´s leading provider of inter-enterprise software solutions, and BackWeb® Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: BWEB), the leading provider of push for e-business solutions, today announced a strategic alliance that will make BackWeb's patented Polite™ push technology an underlying component of the mySAP.com™ Marketplace from SAP. As part of this solution, SAP is working with BackWeb to provide a push platform for its popular mySAP.com business-to-business online community and solution set. The new service will allow companies to streamline processes and dramatically cut the time and costs associated with requests for proposals (RFPs) and requests for quotes (RFQs).

The new SAP and BackWeb alliance means mySAP.com Marketplace portal visitors and customers will benefit from push-enabled applications to politely deliver and receive business-critical information, content and software. BackWeb's push for e-business solutions allow companies to deliver vital or time-sensitive information to users, complete with unique attention management tools that ensure important information is noticed and acted upon. The new agreement with SAP also means that BackWeb technology can easily be incorporated into any application built with mySAP.com solutions.

The mySAP.com Marketplace is an open collaborative business environment of personalized solutions on demand. The mySAP.com Marketplace's new push-enabled services will initially include an application using BackWeb's Polite push technology, an advanced publishing and distribution technology. It will provide a comprehensive, streamlined, interactive environment for buyers and sellers in the electronic distribution of RFPs and RFQs to a global group of potential buyers and sellers. mySAP.com leverages more than 20,000 SAP™ installations and more than 10 million users including those in the partner ecosystem.

"The mySAP.com Marketplace is designed to engage the world's most advanced Web-based technologies to solve real business problems for today's enterprises," said Heinz Ulrich Roggenkemper, executive vice president at SAP Labs, Inc. "BackWeb's technology has the sophistication and scalability to provide advanced push capabilities. We are pleased to partner with BackWeb to deliver services that help our customers to better compete in the Internet economy using the mySAP.com Marketplace with seamless push-enabled RFP and RFQ services."

With BackWeb's patented Polite push technology, Global 2,000 companies can deliver multimedia-rich digital packages of any size or format, including audio, video, graphics and HTML. BackWeb's Polite Agent™ avoids disrupting the customer by using only available bandwidth and delivering the information in the background.

"Push technology is revolutionizing the Internet in ways that are benefiting customer experiences and corporate bottom lines," said Eli Barkat, chairman and CEO of BackWeb Technologies. "This exciting new partnership with SAP will have a far-reaching impact on how businesses buy and sell on the Web and will further entrench BackWeb as a de facto standard technology for e-business."

Commonly used to select vendor proposals for major contracts involving large corporations, federal agencies and municipalities, RFPs and RFQs can involve thousands of pages of information sent to each vendor, currently via courier either in paper format or on CD digital media. The process often includes frequent updates based on design changes by the buyer or suggestions by potential vendors.
