BackWeb Names Walter May Vice President of EMEA

Industry Veteran to Expand Strategic Sales throughout Europe, Middle East and Asia

SAN JOSE, Calif.- March 1, 2001 - BackWeb® Technologies (Nasdaq: BWEB), a leading provider of push communication infrastructure for e-business, today announced the appointment of Walter May as the vice president of Europe, Middle East and Asia (EMEA). May joins BackWeb with more than 15 years of experience in direct sales, channel development and global operation management. May is responsible for expanding BackWeb's direct sales organization across Europe and Asia.

"Walter has a tremendous amount of experience in developing a strong and profitable sales organization for U.S.-based corporations with development initiatives across Europe," said Gwen Spertell, COO of BackWeb. "His experience in developing effective business-to-business sales opportunities will enhance BackWeb's global expansion efforts and drive the worldwide adoption of a proactive communications infrastructure in global enterprises."

Prior to joining BackWeb, May held the position of vice president and general manager of EMEA at Motiva Software Corporation, a provider of B2B Collaborative Change Management solutions. While at Motiva, May established a strong direct sales force throughout the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

May also held various senior positions in sales and general management for SDRC, an international B2B software and services company, where he was responsible for the company's United Kingdom and Ireland operations. In this role, he achieved significant and sustained growth in revenue, margin and services. Prior to SDRC he held engineering positions at Pilkington and Corus. He holds a MSc in Engineering from Cranfield University and a MBA from the Open Business School.
