New BackWeb Sales Accelerator 2.0 Enhanced for Business-to-Business and Extranet Applications

New Java Architecture, Offline Browser Interface, and Automated Publishing Streamline Mission-Critical Partner Communications

SAN JOSE, Calif. — February 9, 2000 — BackWeb® Technologies (Nasdaq: BWEB), the leading provider of push for e-business solutions, today unveiled BackWeb Sales Accelerator 2.0, the next generation of its popular solution for empowering the sales chain with mission-critical communication, delivery and feedback capabilities. BackWeb Sales Accelerator 2.0 features several enhancements designed to streamline business-to-business communication – particularly among trading and business partners that use different computing platforms.

"The importance of getting the right information at the right time to partners, resellers and employees has never been more vital," said Todd Johnson, vice president of marketing at BackWeb Technologies. "BackWeb Sales Accelerator 2.0 simplifies the often complicated process of communicating both inside and outside the firewall with a host of new features designed especially for business-to-business applications. BackWeb Sales Accelerator 2.0 allows companies to build and maintain productive and profitable relationships with partners, resellers and sales organizations."

BackWeb Sales Accelerator allows companies to focus the attention of their resellers, partners and sales force on critical messages and alerts so they can react to important business and market changes. BackWeb's on-going, proactive communication capabilities also enable companies to strengthen their relationships with partners and resellers by keeping them constantly informed – and eliminating the need for them to spend time looking for updated information and documents every time they need them.

BackWeb Sales Accelerator 2.0 Enhancements

BackWeb Sales Accelerator 2.0 incorporates a broad range of new features and capabilities that allow Global 2000 companies to automatically deliver time-sensitive, mission critical information and content to targeted recipients both inside and outside the firewall.

  • A new Java™ architecture that allows BackWeb Sales Accelerator 2.0 to fit seamlessly into multiplatform, business-to-business and extranet environments. With its new Java/Servlet based architecture, the BackWeb Sales Accelerator 2.0 server will be able to run in the heterogeneous environment of business-to-business systems.
  • A new, browser-based client interface offers a unified, easy-to-use interface for publishing, subscribing to, and viewing content. With the new interface, recipients can view delivered content in a browser interface even when they are offline. They can also access all online and offline capabilities through a single user interface. With Sales Accelerator 2.0, automatic updates can be received anytime the user is online, so critical documents can be kept up-to-date and accessible 24 hours a day.
  • A new Permission Groups setting provides flexible deployments and operations of the BackWeb Sales Accelerator, minimizing maintenance and operation costs. The permissions settings allow authorized usage of the BackWeb Sales Accelerator by many groups of people, enabling companies to deploy and administer a single instance of the application for different uses. With this new feature, companies can assign viewing permissions and rights to entire groups, each with specific access settings. The Permission Groups setting gives BackWeb Sales Accelerator 2.0 the information it needs to automatically send appropriate information to approved recipients. The new feature minimizes maintenance and operations costs, and allows companies to exert better control over content delivery.
  • Automated publishing features give companies greater control over the content they send, and offer more flexibility than ever before. With BackWeb Sales Accelerator 2.0, companies can automatically publish content from existing business systems, file servers or the Web to keep sales personnel, partners and resellers up-to-date with as little publishing effort as possible. The new release allows companies to automatically target recipients by topic or language, and even such specific criteria as the user's operating system, CPU, or color, sound and monitor capabilities.
  • A new online viewing capability allows users who may be away from their primary PC to view or download BackWeb Sales Accelerator content via any standard Web browser – even if that system does not have BackWeb client software installed.
  • Windows® 2000 support. BackWeb clients that ship with the new BackWeb Sales Accelerator V2.0 application will support the upcoming Microsoft® Windows® 2000 operating system.

BackWeb Sales Accelerator 2.0 includes a host of other features, such as: enhancements to user administration functions; a hierarchical group structure that eases the process of defining groups for targeting content; predefined subscriptions that ensure content is delivered to users who need it most; more flexible user lists for automatically delivering targeted content; and numerous approval and workflow enhancements. The new release also includes other enhancements to BackWeb Sales Accelerator's Market Intelligence Module and Automated Encyclopedia Module. The Automated Encyclopedia module offers organization of documents by topic and an enhanced subscription and alerting mechanism. The Market Intelligence Module provides a Web-based administrative interface and new content processing capabilities.
