BackWeb Expands SAP Relationship to Include SAP Portals

ProactivePortal Technology Provides Offline Access Solution for SAP AG and SAP Portals Customers

SAN JOSE, Calif. - January 29, 2002 - BackWeb Technologies (Nasdaq: BWEB), the leading provider of ProactivePortal™ technologies for the enterprise, today announced that it has signed a technology partnership with SAP Portals to deliver the BackWeb® ProactivePortal Server™ through SAP Portals iView technology. The new technology partnership expands BackWeb's more than three-year relationship with SAP to provide offline content access to its portal customers, in addition to the patented Polite® content delivery technology and alert notifications that BackWeb currently bundles with mySAP.com CRM.

As a result of the relationship, BackWeb will offline enable iViews and proactively deliver that information through an enterprise portal environment. Offline access is quickly becoming a must-have enterprise portal requirement. The Delphi Group reports that up to 50% of critical portal users, ranging from sales and line-of-business managers to executives, require offline capabilities to their portal. By offline enabling iViews and delivering content through the same enterprise portal interface, mobile professionals have the ability to access vital information while they are disconnected, thus enabling better, faster decision-making and ROI.

SAP Portals Enterprise Portal technology brings together every piece of critical information and delivers it to users so they can react quickly, make better decisions and collaborate to increase business speed and efficiency. Through its ProactivePortal technology, BackWeb will provide offline access to SAP Portals solution, ensuring that the end-user has uninterrupted portal access, online as well as offline, and that the local content is continuously updated. SAP Portals welcomed a partnership with BackWeb because it recognizes that offline access to portal content is a "must-have" requirement for portal technology, enabling customers to gain more value from their portal implementation.

"Existing customer interest and industry analyst endorsements illustrate that offline access to critical information is a requirement for the success of an organization's portal strategy," said Gil Perez, vice president global alliances and partners, SAP Portals. "By implementing BackWeb's technology with our enterprise portal solution, users will be able to access the portal in the same familiar browser interface they are used to when they are working offline and still have the same personalized experience. This will ensure timely access to critical information, increase productivity and revenues and will allow our customers to realize the portal ROI."

"Building on our three year partnership with SAP, we are thrilled to now expand this relationship to include SAP Portals," said Erez Lorber, vice president of business development, BackWeb Technologies. "This partnership positions BackWeb as a technology business partner for SAP Portals and our ProactivePortal technology as a must-have solution for offline access to SAP Portals. Since 25 to 50 percent of all portal users are mobile or disconnected, our solutions are becoming increasingly important for users to access critical, up-to-date information offline."
