BackWeb Announces Partnership with Plumtree to Provide Integration with Plumtree Corporate Portal

BackWeb ProactivePortal Technologies Provides Offline Content Access and Proactive Notification to Plumtree Gadget Web Services

SAN JOSE, Calif.- Jan. 23, 2002 - BackWeb Technologies (NASDAQ: BWEB), the leading provider of ProactivePortal™ technologies for the enterprise, today announced a partnership with Plumtree Software to integrate its ProactivePortal technology with the Plumtree Corporate Portal to provide joint customers with offline access to application services and content via Gadget Web Services, portal components that deliver key services from enterprise applications and the Internet.

Plumtree partnered with BackWeb because it recognizes the value of offline access to portal content, enabling customers to gain more value from their portal resources. Research from The Delphi Group reports that up to 50% of critical portal users, ranging from sales and line-of-business managers to executives, require offline capabilities to their portal.

BackWeb's offline portal technology allows Plumtree users to access portal content and services while disconnected from the Internet. Once offline-enabled, the Gadget Web Services are always available to the user, whether online or offline, and the information is always kept up-to-date. BackWeb's offline portal technology allows Plumtree users to access portal content while disconnected from the Internet with the same personalized Plumtree user interface. This feature is especially critical for remote users who need offline access to portal resources to do their jobs effectively. The BackWeb® ProactivePortal Server™ also offers proactive notification, which delivers time-sensitive alerts to portal users when content is updated via attention-grabbing flashes without interfering with the active applications.

"Plumtree's vision is to bring together in one place key electronic resources that employees, partners and customers need to do business," said Joe McVeigh, Plumtree's co-founder and Alliance Manager. "Plumtree's integration with BackWeb's offline access and priority notification solutions will provide our joint customers with a distinct competitive advantage by keeping them up-to-date all the time, regardless of their location."

"We are very excited to be partnering with Plumtree, a pioneer and leader in the corporate portal software market," said Erez Lorber, vice president of business development at BackWeb Technologies. "Offline access to portal content and proactive notification are becoming increasingly critical to an organization's overall portal technology. Plumtree's integration of our ProactivePortal technology will provide joint customers additional flexibility in accessing portal resources. We look forward to working with Plumtree and our joint customers to help maximize the value of portal content by making it available offline."

Under the terms of the agreement, BackWeb and Plumtree will jointly participate in web-based and regional seminars, train their sales and support staffs about the new relationship, co-brand marketing collateral materials and create awareness and demand for the two companies' products and services.
