BackWeb’s software makes it possible for these applications or the data they need to be automatically updated. This ensures that the applications are as productive as possible with little effort from the user. Specifically, BackWeb gives these applications the same automatic, background update functionality used by other update services like Windows Update. Once an update has been received, the application may also use BackWeb to notify the user with a desktop alert, similar to those used by other applications like Outlook. BackWeb is designed to be "polite" in its use so that it only updates when a user's PC is not working on other tasks. In no case does BackWeb track and record actions on a PC.

All BackWeb customers are known to BackWeb and operate their software with a maintenance contract and software license from BackWeb. Furthermore, our customers agree, when they sign our licensing agreement, to never use BackWeb as spyware. We know that our customers who are using BackWeb for public applications are doing so with well-publicized, opt-in services.
